Words I Spoke At Chrissy's Memorial Service 3/20/11

On a warm day in March 2002 , I was driving my bus westbound on Chapman Ave. When I approached the stop at Brookhurst St, I noticed a young lady in a green lamme' blouse .Chrissy was the last one to enter the bus and I hooked my pinky finger under the edge of her sleeve as I asked her, "What is that made of ? It looks awfully hot." Her response was a laugh and a smile...and now, I was hooked. She was on her way to apply for a job somewhere down Beach Blvd, and I told her when I would be back and to wait for me. I saw her on my next trip westbound waiting for the eastbound 54, leaned out my window and told her to get her butt over to my stop across the street. she came running and I took her to lunch at Carl's Jr at the end of my line...Chapman & Valley View. That became "our" Carl's Jr. It wasn't long before she got her security Officer job and beamed with pride guarding places like SpyGlass Hill in Newport. A slip & fall in the wee hours of the morning while walking the grounds on her post caused a broken bone in her foot that took the workman's comp Drs 14 months to find. Sometime after her complete recovery from a foot surgery, Chrissy found a new security firm to work for and was once again in security officer heaven. She was posted on several large companies, and in one instance, subdued a perp running from the police, after he made the mistake of hiding on her post at American Career College near Magnolia and La Palma. She loved to be of service ...she loved to be needed. Chrissy loved children, and was disappointed she never had any of her own. She loved animals, and kept trying to get me to adopt a pet for my mobile. We shared sentimentality. We could be watching a movie together, and both of us would have tears in our eyes and then she would turn to me and say, "It's O K, Babe." She loved traveling and went back east with me when my own son died at 39 years old too. Bobby and Chrissy were friends from the first moment they met in Las Vegas on superbowl weekend, and he asked Chrissy to "watch over my Dad, will you?". Chrissy had met most of my family, even attending a family reunion with me in Virginia. We also shared the love of food, although I should have known there was something wrong with her...she liked her steak WELL DONE ! We had many favorite places to eat, JackShrimp, Portillo's, The Vintage Steakhouse, Lone Star, Gemmell's French Restaurant and Rustic Pizzeria where we met our friends Daniel Flanagan (Rumanian) , Cesar & Aida Rusu. Aida was about seven months pregnant when we had our first bite of Rustic pizza, and we just went to Caleb's first birthday party in Jan of this year. One bite from the pizza man from Transylvannia and we were both hooked. And best of all, from my point of view, Chrissy loved me. I already miss her so much. I opened a memorial Page in her honor : http://christine.canterberry.muchloved.com where I will be telling more and more of our experiences during the last nine years together.
